1. You pronounce Tisha B'av pretty well.

2. It's more of a fasting day, not a business holiday.

3. The thing it's remembered for is that both Jewish temples were allegedly destroyed on it. The other events could be mentioned as "BTW, it happened around that day" at curiosity level but not more than that as far as I can tell. Last time I read, I think that one of the temples was probably destroyed a day before or after but it's too much to fast for 48 hours in a raw (also remember it's the middle of summer - around July-August) so they were combined.

(And before you compare the Jewish fasting to the Muslims fasting month of Ramadhan - Jewish fasting is from sundown to sundown. Ramadhan fasting is only during sunlight)

(It's also both mine and my mom's Jewish birthday - the legend is that the Messiah would be a third generation born on that day but alas, I missed it with all my kids 😉).

Ah and btw - pretty much all Israelis I know (including me and my extended family) hate the Israeli government and prime minister too, and know very well to distinguish between the Iranian regime and the Iranian people.

Excellent point that needs to be emphasized more, in my opinion. Netanyahu makes most of us Isreal supporters, cringe. Way before Oct 7.

Is it too late to keep trying? 😜

On a more serious note, I seem to recall being told at Hebrew school as a kid that there’s a moshiach born every generation somewhere in the world, but neither they nor anyone else knows that they are, unless G-d decides it’s time for the return to be announced. Which I guess hasn’t happened yet. Anyway, is there any merit to this idea?

I have no idea.

I'm an atheist, and grew up as a third generation secular Jew in Israel (i.e. where the majority of the population is Jewish, so the tradition stuff is not as important part of your life as a minority group like, for instance, Jews in the diaspora), so I'm possibly the least likely expert on religion stuff.

Gotcha. Same here. Not very religious at all but respect the historical traditions and lore. I guess since you mentioned the legend of the of the messiah and the 3rd generation of birthdays thought you might have heard of this too. I remember reading it somewhere but ofc that was decades ago
