The fact is that WW3 is coming at some point in the not-distant future. The seeds were sown soon after WWII. In the decades since then, the foreign policies of the major powers have retarded or accelerated the progress toward it. The US reticence about using our national power in firm ways, always looking for 'de-escalation' has sometimes slowed it, but often just plowed fertile ground ahead of it. Where and how it starts is still to be determined, but it will almost certainly be an accident or unintentional snowball effect action and reaction from different actors. Some tinpot will think they see an opportunity and piss off the wrong other tinpot that draws a major power into the grinder. Regional and global-scale conflicts historically don't come from a single action or reaction, they typically come about as a cascade of responses that widen and draw other powers into the conflict. We in the West tend to think of singular events starting wars, such as Pearl Harbor (1941) or the Invasion of France (1914 & 1939). But those were just precipitating events in conflicts that had already been simmering in other directions. How different powers choose to ignore or respond to the actions of other large and small powers can affect the timing, but the temperature continues to rise and eventually someone...historically someone unexpected...is going to strike a match.
