I saw somebody comparing this video to Kristallnacht today. Dude had 70k followers, not some "nobody". And didn't APPEAR to be an outright shill for Hamas. (Claimed to be Jewish) At least as far as Twitter's concerned.
Point is, yes, this guy went overboard "doing his duty", and some folks at home on their sofas need a safety pin now. And ANOTHER dude on his sofa at home...me...is cringing at the word "morality" thrown around leisurely. Likely the shop was already 3 sheets to the wind, and he was just "venting" because it was a convenient venue at that minute.
"This guy's in a lot of trouble"? I'm skeptical. Yes, he will get his ass thoroughly chewed. The dude(s) that filmed it will get their asses thoroughly chewed. Obviously, the Hamas apologists will light themselves on fire over it. I'm glad Ryan got the chance to make a video on it...get himself some of that sweet, sweet Youtube cheddar...but I do hope we also keep this in perspective.
Are you seriously apologizing for this guy? I fully support Israel, but this is unacceptable, period. It doesn't matter what state he found the shop in, he made it worse for the owner, he made it worse for Israel, and he made it easier for Hamas. There is nothing, zero, to be gained by behaving in this manner. Stop trying to justify bad behavior.
Again, some dude from his sofa who HASN'T been shot at for 6 weeks or so. I wouldn't say I "apologized for the guy". I just ain't gonna light myself on fire for THIS kind of thing. War is hell, and this transgression might be a couple notches above room temp...
Maintain some perspective while the Abyss tries to swallow you in realtime.
You came here specifically to rant about soft people sitting on their couches being mad about this video. We should be mad. Sounds like a choice you made to defend them when you excused the state of the shop.
Yes, it is poor behavior. However, some people are equating it with the October 7 attack....as if breaking a few "odds and ends" is equivalent to rape and murder.
Who cares what some people are equating it to? I can go on instagram right now and find lots of people equating lots of things to lots of other things that make no sense. There's still no justification for defending this behavior in a supposedly well-disciplined military. Your comment just could have ended at "Yes, it is poor behavior." It's the "however" and "but" that always leads to the bad take
I was a company Top. In an infantry unit deployed to combat. I would have disciplined that soldier for dicking around. From my perspective it seems like a lot of pearl clutching for nothing. In the midst of war a cupid ceramic figurine was broken on purpose by a soldier. Oh the humanity. Folks need to lighten up.
I don’t know if I would call it pearl clutching. I was a first sergeant as well, although I was an E7 first sergeant. The problem is that once you let a standard slip, you just set a new standard.
I get what you’re putting down, Top. But here’s the thing: I was concerned about batteries and lube and working nvg’s and boot lieutenants when I was deployed. I never once pounced on a Marine b/c of intentional pottery breakage. I’d make the Marine “pay” for not doing his job and for playing grab-ass games. I’d never crawl all over a young enlisted Marine for broken ceramic cupids. I respectfully disagree with you on this one. This smacks of over officiousness to me. Be well.
I would have expected better out of you, being a Marine. It's really sad that you seem to think that this behavior is fine and that people have no right to be upset. It's one thing if it were broken as a result of fighting, but this asshat decided to go into a store and spend 10 minutes smashing it up. Destroying items of value of an innocent non-combatant. So no, folks don't "need to lighten up." This is unacceptable behavior, and if you don't think so, perhaps it's a good thing you're not serving any more.
Respectfully, you don’t know me so please keep your virtue signaling where it belongs. During my deployments I had two concerns as an NCO: getting the mission done and getting my Marines home in one piece. I never have nor will I ever shed a tear for broken ceramic chachkies. Be well.
if the mission is winning, making the body bags count, you are proactively working for losing and making the body bags mean nothing if you are unable to understand soldiers do not act in a vacuum, they act in a context, which deeply affects the ultimate goal. So far Israel has won wars against nation states, and has failed to do so against Hamas. If they lose traction to the point they are forced to an armistice, they basically look shit, fail to destroy Hamas, and just wait for the second merry go round. So, mission fail, soldiers dead for nothing.
Lolz. You do realize you’re pontificating over a ceramic tchotchke, right? In order to have such certain moral outrage you must have seen the video of the IDF soldier being used for propaganda, right? Frankly, I’ve only seen that video on this Substack; don’t think it’s the propaganda victory for Hamas that you think. Is it possible that you are making the proverbial mole hill into a mountain made of moral injury? Food for thought. Be well.
The soldier was clearly violating the IDF code of conduct. And he and his filming buddy gave the HAMAS material for the information war. I don't know why anybody should ligthen up about this.
Have you seen the great ceramic Cupid destruction videos being used by Hamas for recruitment? Seen them on Al Jazeera? Of course you haven’t and neither has anyone else. Know why? Because in urban war wherein kids and old woman are killed daily an F-ing tchotchke snuff vid only matters to the pearl clutchers. Be well.
I tried to understand your point of view. Among all the destruction and killing in Gaza, the massacre in Israel, a man braking some toys is just not relevant. This is true.
I also tried to put myself into the shoes of the people whose property was vandalized. And I don't think they are chilled about this incident, even considering they might have witnessed far worse things. What they see is an Israeli soldier intruding into their shop, breaking everything and making fun of it. And he will get away with it. This humiliation only adds to all the grievances those people already have.
So for which team will those people cheer? From their point of view, the soldier made the HAMAS recuitment video, no editing needed. With the social media being what they are, there is no need that this is run on Al Jazeera, it will get around. And you can find the video on Al Jazeeras YouTube channel: "Israeli soldier makes video vandalizing Plaestian shop in Gaza" (https://youtube.com/shorts/iwK1PAGvt9k?si=1W6nYc3hnKyTWM7Q). Go, read the comments.
What pearl clutchers (including myself) see is not just a dude breaking toys, they see the symbolic value. Just as the recent burning of a Koran (Quran?) in Sweden was not just burning paper, people got really upset (pearl clutchers I guess). In some parts of the world people get upset when cloth with stars and stripes on it is burned even though it's perfectly legal. Again, pearl clutchers.
Beyond that, it still stands that this behaviour violates the IDF code of conduct. Even if you boil down the rules of conduct to just two points: What job was this soldier getting done? How did it contribute to him getting home in one piece? Those are rhetoric questions.
It's worth adding that the leadership in the IDF is in full agreement that this behavior (as well as the photographing of stripped down prisoners) are unacceptable and in opposition to the IDF's code of conduct. At least according to official statements made in local media (I don't follow on X so I don't know if an internationally public response has been made).
On a personal note - While most militaries have similar rules of conduct, there have always been instances similar to this throughout the different wars over the last few decades, but without social media the military could at least put out its best face towards the public - Which the public needs. The public needs to believe their military is just and honorable for morale. This is especially true in Israel where many of us often forget how young our soldiers are. We need to forget that these are mostly college-age kids (many reservists are just 20-21 who just came out of the conscripted service). Even when we were those same kids.
But these days, given social media, the world doesn't get to see just the "best face", but rather have access to everything. A compilation of the worst behaviors gets put out to people who never served (let alone in Israel) to give the appearance that that's the whole of the military, just as the best behaviors are used to give the appearance that that's the whole of the military. The reality, as usual, is an ugly mix. A lot of good, a lot of bad, and a lot of views shaped only by what you have seen, and especially what you've seen first. This is good, because it gives us the tools to hold our people accountable. But this is also bad, because it lets exaggerated views manifest (if this video was the only example of an IDF soldier that someone had seen, they may be easier to convince that the IDF is barbaric and cruel).
I'm unsure if the soldier in question was a reservist because of his misconduct (he looks fairly young), the IDF is still a draftee army and so their discipline is not near what we have in the U.S. Army. I was a DoD security contractor in Israel back in 2013-15, had the privilege to do some joint-operations with them during the 2014 Gaza War and found both their NCOs and junior officers enforcing good order and discipline fairly lacking compared to us. This whole episode is an example of it (as you mentioned) but I think its more commonplace across the IDF than just reservists. I doubt the soldier is facing any serious consequences for their actions (at least I haven't seen any mention in any Israeli news sources), I think a lot of these videos or even the ones taken of Qassam prisoners are not intended for international audiences and those taking them are only making them through the lens of an Israeli audience.
There was a recent incident of an IDF soldier responding to a terrorist attack in the West Bank, who ended up shooting the Israeli citizen who stopped that attack while they had dropped their weapon and went to their knees.
In fact the IDF soldier in question whole unit is being questioned by the IDF for their conduct during operations, but it all shows a worrying discipline issue in the IDF. (article https://archive.ph/sUDOE)
Though overall the IDF is a competent and professional fighting force but it does have its challenges and it shows in some of the conduct of their forces (as you mentioned in previous videos). I am pleased with how well the operation is going and the much smaller number of casualties they've taken so far.
Regarding the soldier being a reservist or not - It's worth noting than in Israel a "Reservist" is as young as 20-21 (Fresh out of conscription). From my time in the IDF I can say that it is the conscripts that tend to have a more strict grasp of conduct, while reservists are looked on as less caring. There is a logic to it, too. When you're a conscript, being in the IDF is essentially your whole life for those 2-3 years. But as a reservist, the IDF plays a smaller and smaller role, and most of your day to day life is civilian. This often causes a significant disconnect among reservists that can't "switch" to the military mindset when they're called upon.
That switch, by the way, is a metric that the IDF looks at in Boot Camp - How well do the new privates have adjusted in the 2 month period (length of the initial boot camp without any advanced training) from being civilians to being full-time military personnel.
Well, those are a very young men and they're acting as such. There is such acting everywere including the US army (the only difference is not filming the stupid).
I didn't liked what I saw. It wasn't the right thing to do. But after almost 2 month of figthing and seeing your friends getting shot or dying or worst you kind of in need of "letting of steem"
By the end the day - all the world hate the IDF right now and this video won't help but we don't care.
They're deffending their own state and a littel misscondact will not be seeing on the background of the entire theatre of war
It’s almost as if some folks think a made in China tchotchke broken by an IDF soldier in Gaza is the moral equivalent of Israeli women being raped and murdered. Maybe they missed The NY Times article yesterday, ‘Screams Without Words’: How Hamas Weaponized Sexual Violence on Oct. 7
A Times investigation uncovered new details showing a pattern of rape, mutilation and extreme brutality against women in the attacks on Israel.
By Jeffrey Gettleman, Anat Schwartz and Adam SellaPhotographs by Avishag Shaar-Yashuv
Jeffrey Gettleman, Anat Schwartz and Adam Sella reported from across Israel and interviewed more than 150 people.
The pride of Gaza, the sons of Palestine raped and murdered scores of women. I wonder if the folks clutching the pearls and wringing their hands about the broken Cupid share the same sentiments when they read about the 15 and 16 y/o sisters who were raped and murdered by Hamas? Or the women raped from behind while being stabbed in the back? Wonder if they shed the same tears for those women who had nails driven into their thighs and vaginas before being murdered.
That IDF soldier is NOT going to be sent to jail. Nor will he be demoted. He’s already been punished by his unit.
So for all those folks shedding tears over the made in China Cupid - grow up!
Thank you Ryan for your videos and your analytics its really helpfull and thorough.

Lolz. Yeah, I can see it now: the newest Hamas terror brigade - the broken cupids. Listen, if you want to turn this insignificant mole hill into aggrievement mountain by all means have at it. I think this useless dead horse had been beaten enough. Let’s all shout from the rooftops: save the

Ryan, love your videos. I was wondering if you could comment on this contradiction I discovered.
How can the IDF be using precision weapons to target military combatants, based on intel (in an effort to minimize casualties) while simultaneously failing to uncover intelligence predicting, arguably, the most devastating attack on Israeli soil?
