Sorry, but for many of us, this is exactly the kind of thing that we knew would happen - but b/c the majority (of the minority that of the eligible electorate that actually voted), elected the tangerine man and his Elroy-Pukin agenda, those of us who voted for the other candidate are now enjoying the initial round (of what will likely be in the hundreds of) schadenfreude experiences that are befalling all those who voted these azzphats into power…
Now, just imagine how these folks are gonna screw-up the lead-up to the China face-off, that Ryan has been discussing…
Ryan is there any good reason to explain why the Trump administration has shut down the VOA? Is there any tangible or feasible benefit/reason for doing so?
Ryan, here is a hint: Tulsi Gabbard retweeted on 15th post by Ian Miles Cheong (please explain to your readers who she is and who he is) " https://x.com/TulsiGabbard

*** Love to hear from USA viewers/readers how they see it. Please. ***
I think shutting down the family of VoA outlets is stupid and shortsighted. But I understand the argument. Government shouldn’t be running radio networks. And if this were the United States of Earth I’d agree. There are lots….some things I don’t mind the feds spending my tax dollars on. I’d happily send VoA 50 bucks a month on Patreon. I’d subscribe to NASA for $100 a month easily. Let me choose where my dollars go.
I've thought that a similar arrangement should be made to process private donations to send food relief to ungrateful Gazans, fund transportation to pro-choice states for those who're sexually irresponsible, or provide HIV meds where they're so desperately needed, if and when state laws or cancellation of foreign aid occurs.
I'd support VOA, safe sex products and promotion, and African AIDS relief as an impoverished libertarian, but doubt that Dems, lefties or the woke would contribute to much of what they'll riot, vandalize and assault for, to compel the rest of us to fund with our tax bucks.
If they or we sincerely, passionately support feeding Hamas, or retaining VOA, we should do so voluntarily, perhaps through lean agencies staffed by disabled vets with enough oversight to have prevented the shit that BLM and Fauchi pulled off.
Putin is giddy with his good fortune now that Russia loving Musk and Trump are destroying things. VOA projects America's soft power by exposing the lies and corruption of the authoritarian countries like Russia. It also helps us make friends around the world. Now we have no friends. And no Russia, North Korea, and Hungary are not our friends. BTW you never know you needed friends until you really need them. We will rue the day we let Musk and Trump do this to our country.
More like an assault on state sponsored speech. Mike Benz (AKA "Frame Game") really connected with Musk on state sponsored censorship and it extended into his distaste for soft power, statecraft, and clandestine activity. I don't mind applying dark arts on other countries just don't apply it on us back home (like Soros and the democrats have done). He's throwing the baby out with the bath water.
"Voice of America" does not have a right to the taxpayer dollar and the government does not have any obligation to fund their activities. The government is obligated to not infringe on freedom of speech of citizens of USA and that's where that obligation ends.
VOA promotes freedom, democracy, and human rights to the world. Those are all good things that benefits America. Why? A stable free democratic international community promotes wellbeing, wealth, and a free peoples. Everything despots like Putin, Xi, Kim Jong Un, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán hate.
Great news! That sounds like things you are interested in. You should give them YOUR money. Because it's really easy to spend other people's money, isn't it?
Y'mean like the tens of millions of taxpayer dollars that Trump spends on his constant golf trips and travel to his other properties? Or the millions of taxpayer dollars he charges the Secret Service for using his facilities to protect him during said junkets? Ad nauseam.
Oh God save us all from the self righteous Libertarians otherwise known as people who don't want to be known as Republicans but want to own the Republican narrative. For those on here who didn't take a government class in H.S. we live in a representative Democracy (and yes Republic is a form of democratic government before you opine). This means you get to elect the people who make the choices for you. Sometimes they tell you what they are going to do and sometimes not. So thinking that you are getting $50 to spend on Patron or $100 on NASA subscription is just juvenile you don't get that choice. Your choice is to elect someone you hope will represent you and sometimes align with values. VOA was a good choice for promoting American principles in my opinion and I guarantee you that all the Congresspersons, Senators that I helped elect agree. If you ever traveled abroad especially in the third world you would understand how influential to promoting our democracy and values in the world. You can be sure that Russia and China will fill the void.
I was quoted without being called out. This is gonna ramble… the U.S. is a constitutional democratic republic as opposed to the U.K. which is a constitutional democratic monarchy. Even if their king has very little actual power. The democratic part means elections; the republic part means no king.
While I’ve voted for libertarians over 95% of the time since like 2005 I lean much more anarchist than Republican.
I regularly write to my representatives, federal, state, and local, about my concerns. Their job is to represent us. Votes or not. Sen Ossoff held an inquiry with the postmaster for all of Georgia, and America, not just those who voted for him. That’s the way this experiment is supposed to work.
Is that the cant "anarchist". I will try to keep up with the nonsense. Whatever floats your boat, but you're not fooling anyone but yourself. Yeah, for the record at most I find it amusing if disingenuous. As for your definition on a Republic just look it up you got it wrong but thanks for trying to correct me by changing it. Oh and your hardly a anarchist you should just stick with realistic things rather than fantasy. IMHO
If there's any consolation here, it's that VOA won't be used by the current administration to backstop Russian propaganda. Better for the VOA to go away than suffer such a worse fate.
Grover Norquist, founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform told National Public Radio in 2001, “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”
Shutting down VoA is at the very least ironclad proof that Trump and Rubio have absolutely no idea how foreign policy or American influence in the world works. Shutting down USAID was the first obvious sign that these dummies were going to work against their OWN self interest by throwing out all goodwill and leverage BEFORE even trying to implement any policy.
The current administration is truly a confederacy of dunces.
Ryan, I always appreciate your perspectives. This is the reverse of community policing. In community policing you stop and address broken windows and eventually you'll get to the point where people will support you in fighting major crimes. In this case the Trump administration is targeting a soft target in the VOA, knowing that if they can get away with it they will be able to target more significant institutions of the Free press. This is a minor crime that serves to condition us to accept Major crimes by this regime.
I have read with no tangible evidence to back it up. That some of those things taken off of DoD websites was "Malicious compliance". A psyop technique used to make the orders look bad. Given some of the Medal of Honor winners had their info taken down and then placed back up it feels possible. I would love to see you apply an intelligence analysis of this. Someone I talked to claimed this was done in 2013 by the National Park Service to make the government shutdowns look bad. (without evidence).
As someone that lives in world of progressive activists, I can see this being true. But it's a challenge to work past my bias.
It was shut down because Russia doesn't like VoA and Tulsi Gabbard is mostly committed to the Russian cause. As DNI, she has incredible influence at the highest level of government.

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps voice of America is necessary anymore with the advent of the Internet and virtual private networks.

Easy thing to cut that most American don't know about.
This exactly. “Voice of America? You mean that old Sammy Hagar song?”
I don't think too many of us know that song! 😉
I was overseas when Osama was killed. I requested the song to be played at the local AFN radio station. AFRTS didn't play it. 🙄🤣
The easy answer is Putin told Trump to do so.

Sure feels like an assault on free press/free speech. As a student of history, this smells very much like Germany 1929….

You can stop contorting yourself and just admit that you guys are done with democracy.
Please elaborate on that point.
The only people unhappy about VOA coverage seem to be leadership in countries that don't have a free press.

Ryan is still in disbelief that Trump is just another politician.
With this video and his recent "Are we the bad guys?", looks like his needle is moving in the right [not Right] direction.
If there's any consolation here, it's that VOA won't be used by the current administration to backstop Russian propaganda. Better for the VOA to go away than suffer such a worse fate.
I don't like all this emasculation of soft power. He tossed the baby out with the bath water with DOGE.
