This video is a placeholder video for an upcoming analysis on this particular battlefield footage. I think this is a tragedy, not a war crime. I will explain why in a video soon.
Agreed. He was either wearing Ukrainian insignia or they thought he was. Since this is probably Wagner, all bets are off. War crime is the most likely scenario.
Yup, casualties were pretty dumbfounded when he was yelling at them. I even think that the uniform might have been from an officer. BUT I know that on the frontlines they don't were insignia/ranks on their uniforms.
I would like to chime in on the subject of whether this russian combatant could have been wearing a Ukrainian uniform or insignia, as it seems most comments here are about how the camera man is possibly posing as a Ukrainian for some tactical advantage, which would be a war crime most likely.
It seems to me like he was most likely wearing a uniform top in the ATACS FG pattern, (and there is a possibility he could be wearing other variants such as ATACS AU, which closely resembles the color palette of the Ukrainians camouflage on other parts of his body) if you freeze the video between 9 and 10 seconds in when he throws a grenade, you can see that his arm is mostly a tan-ish color with a green splotch on his wrist, which is as I stated, most likely ATACS FG. It is then a possibility that due to the lightness/tan look of that pattern on certain cuts of fabric, that the Ukrainians could have mistaken it as one of their uniforms, coupled with the possibility that his pants were of a lighter color, and his equipment could have been similar to what the Ukrainians have used before, and thus he would be mistaken as a friendly. (ATACS FG and variants are a well known, and commenly used by the Wagner Group)
I would also like to point out that if he is a part of the Wagner Group, he may not have the same uniform restrictions that normal soldiers have, and thus there is a chance he could even be wearing something as western as Multicam, or a variant of it, or some knockoff russian version. Which as you know alot of Ukrainians with western support have been seen wearing Multicam uniforms and equipment, and thus could have been the basis for a deadly misunderstanding. You can clearly see later in the video that he has comrades around him dressed in uniforms that are very tan, and resemble both ATACS variants, Multicam variants, and Ukrainian uniforms, however I will point out that the man on the far right of the camera man has a more coyote brown look to him, as opposed to the Ukrainians that look more yellow-ish, which aren't that hard to tell apart, but maybe in the heat of battle there would be some mistake made there, and that could be why he was possibly mistaken for a friendly by the Ukrainians.
Another thing I will point out is that I don't believe it would be in his best interest to wear enemy insignias or actual uniforms, as we see that he is in extreme close proximity to his allies, and if he was wearing the enemies clothing, he would be in very high risk of becoming a victim of friendly fire. However there is definitely a possibility here that he could have been donning a Ukrainian uniform or insignia for malicious purposes.
Next I will quickly say that there were a few possible things the Ukrainians did wrong here that lead me to believe that the camera man is innocent of any crimes involving wearing enemy uniforms. First i think they would have been fairly confused and possibly disoriented at the time, due to the fact that a grenade (over pressure and shrapnel) just went off within extremely close proximity to them, and secondly the man on the left appears to be wounded either in the eye or the head (distorted or lost vision) and the man on the right seems to be fairly frazzled/disoriented due to the adrenaline rush of battle, and the general chaotic environment around him. This leads me to believe that they could have possibly mistaken him for a friendly dispite the very apparent threat he posed to them. All of that is up to discussion however, as I have not been in a situation like this and as a result dont know the complete thought process for those men.
I will quickly state that I am neither pro or against Russia or Ukraine, so I'd doesn't effect me what the truth turns out to be, however it does bug me that so many people instantly turn to point fingers at things like the Wagner Group, whenever something like this comes up, also the fact that it appears none of the comments before me have cited anything more than a single translation, which was piggy-backed off of by a few other replies that only point more fingers without proper evidence. Lastly the fact that people instantly accuse the Wagner Group as a whole of being a bunch of war criminals, and mercenaries that have no limits, and talk about them being independent from Russia's armed forces as being a terrible thing often don't realize that America has done an extremely similar thing previously with Blackwater, and continues with smaller PMC companies that have been charged with similar crimes that the Wagner Group has been accused of, not to mention China having an entire private military force that is nearly completely made up of ex PLA soldiers and police officers, which is almost entirely government controlled too. So I don't think its right to instantly discredit Wagner members due to the sole fact that they are an independent PMC group from Russia. (Not to mention that alot of info we get on our enemies is heavily "propagandized" mostly due to the nature of the internet and western culture as a whole today.)
If anything that I just said didn't make sense or is wrong please let me know as I would like to correct myself, as well as open myself to changing my opinion on this but for now, I believe this is a video of a Wagner Group combatant defeating two Ukrainian soldiers during heavy combat in the Ukraine War, with no war crimes (breaking the Geneva Convention)being committed in this instance on video.
Source for the stuff I mentioned about China having a pmc group comes from the youtube channel Task and Purpose run by Chris Cappy if you were curious.
dude, you started pretty soundly by considering the camos, but in the end you denigrated to the typical ruzzian propaganda how "Wagner members due to the sole fact that they are an independent PMC group from Russia".
Let me be the one who opens your eyes (though maybe you're in fact in the know, but trying to deflect here) about PMC Liga (aka Wagner among common folk) financing. They are getting money through official bloody contracts from the ruzzian government.
GLLABA, Please explain to me how I turned myself into a "ruzzian" propagandist simpley by stating that the pmc Wagner group is separate from the Russian military.
Also, you do realize that getting funding through government contracts is how pmc companies work? Ever heard of Blackwater? And their billions of dollars sent to them directly from the CIA? I figure you should have if you are willing to speak out on this subject, however your phrasing seems to indicate that you perhaps didn't know that government contracts are one of the main ways alot of high profile pmc groups make their money. (Do inform me otherwise if you are aware though.)
Tell me what makes my opinion on this subject suddenly Russian propaganda, and where the hell did you get the information that the Wagner group is so terrible for being funded by their government?
I will also ask what is your opinion on this video? Do you share the "clean kill" opinion, or the "war crime" outlook?
Once again let me know if I've made any mistakes in my writing because I would like you to change my opinion if possible.
Thank ayou for your very insightful assessment and considering all of the factors you brought to light, it does seem your hypothesis is correct; this was likely a “clean” kill amidst the chaos and confusion of battle.
I do take issue with the comparison between the Wagner Group and BlackWater. Yes they are/were both private military contractors, but this is where the comparison ends. Despite the clear evidence of some war crimes committed by BlackWater in Iraq, it does not even come close to the list of offenses that have piled up against the WG. I am not sure what is going to be uncovered in Ukraine, but in Libya and Syria the evidence against WG is pointing to systemic brutality - often against civilian populations. Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders, Islamic Relief, the Red Cross (and those are just the NGO’s) have all reported on WG’s use of banned landmines and booby traps, extrajudicial killings, torture, theft, execution of POW’s... it goes on and on. The Wagner Group is essentially everyone’s worst fear about private military contractors. In light of all this, you can’t blame the general public for feeling rather satisfied, when reports drift in of the WG’s dismal performance against an organized, motivated opponent. It also helps explain the “war crime” tag people so freely toss at the WG.
Two different issues. One is killing in the heat of combat as discussed here. There are wide latatudes in combat. We can discuss it forever, but! The second issue is the mass killing of civilians like in Africa and the Middle East.
There's a Third scenerio. That of active combatisnts hiding in civilian areas. There are documents showing combants changing clothes and surrounding themselves with women and children. This I insist is also a crime.
Thank you for your very insightful assessment and considering all of the factors you brought to light, it does seem your hypothesis is correct; this was likely a “clean” kill amidst the chaos and confusion of battle.

I agree with all your salient points regarding reflexive villianizing one party and would reiterate the post concussion daze that men who just experienced a close proximity detonation.
I would add that your statement of
"All of that is up to discussion however, as I have not been in a situation like this and as a result dont know the complete thought process for those men."
May be understated as my experience of being concussed in a highly chaotic environment (though a non-combat one) really was one of extremely slow processing with a few deeply ingrained responses being the limit.
A soldier is very deeply ingrained with never drop your weapon or let it out of your control from his larval stage in basic training.
Looking at the other RU soldiers in the video, looks to me they are wearing expensive, higher tier gear usually worn by special forces/etc. I think the RU forces were at least regulars, if not special forces, or ex special force Wagnerites. Also the UA troops in the foxhole looked/acted as if they are volunteers with very little experience/training. I would bet that they aren't used to seeing different types of camo and expected the usual green uniforms from RU. They were confused when it looked to be a more NATO/updated style of camo/gear and assumed they were other UA forces.
Good point, I didn't initially notice that, and just chalked it up to "shell shock" however that explanation coupled with some things i pointed out does make a good bit of sense.
The guy yelling Свои Свои in RU/UA means like your own, your own, signaling, we are not the enemy. So this is a war crime.

There's a guy in NJ claiming to be the Russian in this video.
Plot twist, it is him! Haha
Unlikely
Erik, how did you find that out? I would like to read or watch it. I live in New Jersey, so I’m very curious.
A friend of mine went on a date with a guy and showed her the video along with the claim.
It is, shooting unarmed troopers is murder. But! it happens again and again throughout history. Sadly, all armies have committed it.
