This video is a perfect example of how humans tend to try to be extremely objective and cautious when they know people from both sides of a conflict they want to talk about. And that's exactly why we should get to know people who are different, and we shouldn't dismiss real topics, because otherwise, each party will keep enjoying the self-satisfaction of being the "good guys" and the other party being the "pure evil". Thank you Ryan.
Ryan, another excellent video. I just subscribed with a year-long paid subscription because I believe that yours videos are definitely worthwhile.
Yes, my ancestors were a bunch of violent Vikings who were very much into raping, looting and pillaging. Then they settled down in Britain, converted to Christianity and became peaceful and civilized and that is where I am at today.
While it is true that the Ottoman period was relatively peaceful, without qualification it's a bit misleading to say so. Non-Muslims were a lower class and suffered legal discrimination and violent attacks. A lot of people will use that "relative peace" to imply that things were fine before WWI, but that very much isn't true -- it was not a good place to be a Jew or Christian. The rest is mostly accurate, but I would have also maybe talked about 1967 and its consequences. It goes a bit beyond "descendants of refugees who don't feel like they got what they deserved", and I don't think that's a totally fair way to depict their side. While nothing justifies the current violence (or previous waves/wars), they do have more legitimate grievances than that.
Good summary, Ryan. You managed to do a pretty good job of threading the needle of middle eastern affairs without coming down too much on one side or another (or another or another or...). No pearls being clutched around here.
Great video, probably the best that could have been done in 5 minutes with one exception. You did a great job of pointing out the reasoning and motivations for both sides, but missed one very important one, which is that as the Jews in Israel forcing the Palestinians out of the areas they had taken, there was simultaneously mass expulsion and persecution of almost a million Jews across the Arab world.
Ryan, thanks for the history lesson! It adds context to what is going on. As always you are very interesting and spot on to current events! Thanks again and stay safe.
Yes, I’ll echo other comments…you handled the historical description of events very well. Right now, in the US, I’m just hoping my tribe (the Indianapolis Colts) can win a few battles. 😉
I live in Indianapolis and have been a fan of that tribe since they came here, but since Capt. Andrew Luck retired, I have had a hard time being interested. I am following my college tribe, the Kentucky Wildcats, who today are playing the tribe Georgia Bulldogs. We will probably be outnumbered.
Just what the world needed, another war.. I'm too old for boots and running around with a heavy pack and rifle, but if it helps I'm not in favor of it. Lot of help I am these days.
First let me be the first to welcome you to the Carolinas, if you find a spare second you should definitely hit up Greenville, it's a beautiful downtown area, and has some great food / restaurants.
Decades of Apartheid and this is what happens. Watching video of an American (of Palestinian descent) visit the West Bank with the aid of former Israel Soldiers was eye opening to the level of oppression that occurs on a daily basis… disgusting that is still happening in this day and age. Those daily wrongs build up the kind of hate that allows the horrific atrocities and the Evil we saw on October 7th…. Evil begets Evil... 7 decades of this and you would think they would have realized that. Shame and Blame on both sides. Israel has to do something now but killing 10 times the Palestinians and destroying what basic infrastructure they have is only going to sow the seeds of hate in the next generation.🤦♂️
Hamas needs a Northern Ireland/Sinn Fein moment where they realize they have more to gain by renouncing violence than they could possibly ever gain. The context in which this is possible is partly the responsibility of Israel. Hate is so endemic and both cultures have issues with their own versions of chauvinism.
But that example shows the real issue on getting the two sides to agree to anything. The good Friday agreement that ended the violence and normalised life in Northern Ireland was built on reconciliation and forgiveness of the past (still contentious), and being in the EU with Freedom of movement and ROI giving citizenship rights to any NI resident that wants it. The last one is why Brexit was so painful to sort out for NI and ended up in NI being both in and out of the EU and lots of other compromises.
The solution in NI was that the people that felt Irish could be Irish and have essentially the same rights they would have as part of ROI. The NI people that felt British could be British with all the rights that come with that. A big part of this is the secularisation of both the UK and ROI that took the heat out of the protestant vs catholic fight.
And that is the problem with Israel and Palestine. If Palestine is part of Israel and Israel remains a jewish state with special immigration preference for Jewish people, star of David on the flag etc. etc. then this conflict will continue as it's clear Palestinians will be second class citizens. My point is to achieve what you want would probably take an Israeli state that is secular and not preferentially jewish, probably called something else and with a different flag etc.
Great points. The increased religious fanaticism creates unique long term challenges, as does stalwart Jewish conservatism. However stopping the randomized violence that we saw during Passover is the first step, and we don’t get to work on the other stuff so long as attacks continue. The attacks are a form of self sabotage.
"Armenian Golgotha" by Grigoris Balajian and "Thirty Year Genocide" by Benny Morris, et al. are two good books on the Armenian Genocide that the Ottoman Empire committed.
The Arabs rejected the 1947 carve up for the Palestinians and Jews.
"Unlike the Palestinian Authority, Hamas does not support the so-called two-state solution — the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel — as a permanent solution. It advocates for a Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, without an Israel." LA Times
Hamas since they were form have educated the children to hate the Jews. The past couple of generations know nothing but hate towards Israel and its Jewish population. This brain washing is what allows Hamas members to butcher babies.
Sadly, many people will die on both sides. This attack on Israel is on a level that Israel will have to use a level of force against Hamas and to reoccupy the West Bank and Gaza strip for years to come.
Gaza has a weak infrastructure and the people of the Gaza strip will suffer horrendously what Hamas has brought to their homes.

We can only hope the Muslim world settles down and becomes peaceful 🙏

For some odd reason, I remember Rodney King's plaintive plea during the '92 LA riots,
"Can't we all just get along?"
Tribalism will be the end of us.

Excellent video as always, Ryan. There is already a Palestinian state. It is called Jordan.

The world needs level heads, single squint eye, and long distance runners. Fire off more of these Ryan.
