My favorite is the state level misinformation. Russia is already promoting the "Ukrainian Shooter" lie. Turkey has found a way to blame the Kurds for the shooting. (That's some mental gymnastics there.) You and I hear both of these and think it's ridiculous. We aren't the target. It's people who are already predisposed to conspiracy theories that are the targets.

There's been a fair amount of research on people that are prone to believing misinformation. All of us are somewhat susceptible. Some are very susceptible. Especially if the misinformation confirms a bias. You already don't like the Kurds. You already don't support Ukraine and think it's full of Nazis. You are prone to not only believe it, but spread it.

It is a sad day for the united states regardless of one's political belief. Such a collosal security failure must be a wakeup call for all security agencies.

Couldn’t agree more. This hurts America as a whole. The media has to stop with all the insane rhetoric. It’s just over the top. We’re all neighbors and we need to be nicer to each other. Ryan has a great attitude and even though we may or may not be on opposite sides of the isle it doesn’t matter. He would have a beer and be friends with anyone. These days if you’re on the wrong side you’re the enemy. That’s nuts. I miss the good ole days lol

When I first saw that video from the network feed, when Trump reacts and touches his hear and then all the agents jump on him, my first thought was “This looks fake. Those don’t sound like gunshots to me. Nobody behind him is reacting”. I now know that the only sound we were hearing was the speaker's small mic, set for a level of close speech, so of course the audio was misleading. The background people were not in the line of fire, so they were all mostly just confused. But I also had a powerful subconscious desire for this not to be true, and of course residual suspicion from the cacophonous nature of all the campaign rhetoric. I think the kind of commentary that Ryan is presenting here is very helpful at dangerous time for the country, so thanks, Ryan, for the good work.

Notice the AI pic had buttoned cuffs. Trump was wearing cuff links.

Expand full comment

Lol , spreading the misinformation already?! 11 people agreed without even looking to see that the cufflinks are the same on both pics

Expand full comment

Umm, at the time of the event, he was wearing cuff links. Both pics show buttons. Cuff links require a different, more formal style of shirt which pictures of the event show. The 2 pictures in question show buttons, not cuff links. Obviously altered. Learn the difference, take a look at press photos of the event and you will see. And don't accuse me of mis info if you don't even know the difference or are to lazy to look. Thanks!

Both pictures show the same hand, so it's either not his hand and thus your assumption is flawed or (b) both of the pictures were edited and thus, you are in the wrong again. Which one is it?

Expand full comment

I guess you don't know what cuff links are. He was wearing cuff links that day. I doubt he even owns a shirt with buttoned cuffs. Maybe a little Google? Ask anybody who knows the difference? At least 11 people know the difference. Dullard.

My guy, before you start spewing your misinformation, perhaps you should check your narcissistic behavior at the door. Again, you have posted the SAME hand picture. You are feeding misinformation to the masses here.

I myself, if I don’t know where the shots are coming from, would not know where to duck. You can see all the people behind Trump crouch down which won’t do much if the shots are coming from the front of the crowd, over the podium and into the background people. If the shots are coming from one of either sides, which side? I’d feel pretty silly running towards the shots especially if I didn’t have a gun, so I could see the hesitation until you know where the threat is coming from. Even the uniformed police didn’t know, they are scanning the crowd.

don't forget the speed of sound is slower than a 5.56 bullet. At 150m about 1.5 seconds between the crack of a supersonic bullet and the report of the rifle.

This is all so tricky for people who are not familiar with how fakes work. Most of the people I know, are very easily fooled by this. That being said, only a dishonest or venal person would comment "why weren't people behind him hurt?". Every new story said a person was KILLED and others wounded by the shooter. You know your comment embeds a lie and you make it anyway. No level of Hell is low enough for some people.

OK... I really like the critique, Ryan. Great job as always. What I am waiting for is your take on the report that the Department of Justice had neutralized (?) a center dedicated to Russian Bots and headed by an Ex-KGB (?) official. I for one have been very troubled by Russias' interference in our on-line media. Is there a way to validate the report I mention (see: CNN; BBC July 11th). Just wondering if this was accurate as presented or inflated by the media. Thoughts?

Expand full comment

What is amazing about the ongoing Russian interference is that it has been going on for decades and no one seems to take it seriously. So many ridiculous twists on major news, and few people stop to consider or inquire of the source. Russian information operations against the West started in the 50s, has been exposed repeatedly, and yet people just can't seem to accept that it is a thing.

Bingo!! I have always been careful about fact checking my whole life. Lately....maybe the last 15 years or so..... the amount of "news", mis-information, dis-information has b een just so ubiquitous that its even hard to tell authentic News sources from false. These Russians have an edge because it takes time to fact-check.....and you don't even have to think to tell a lie. Know what I mean?

This is a shit show. 2A community saying “this will make Trump more pro 2A”, Ukiebros did it, Antifa harping on that the shooter was a registered republican and wearing a Demolition Ranch shirt, missing the parts that he donates money to forward blue a democratic progressive group. Russians can blame Ukraine, spreaders will amplify it. All of these claims are confirmation bias and “jumping to conclusions”. What happened to the days of waiting for FBI forensics? Oh yeah no one has time for that shit and they’re corrupt anyway, they’ll just say whatever the overlords want….. they even got the secret services ce now….I feel like each day I’m dodging sleestacks and UFO pod people with weapons of mass destruction, the iPhone

Honestly, I doubt that anything will stop the conspiritory 'theorists' in a world where it's all bout the subs, likes, tweets, reposts, etc. I'm certain someone will promulgate a conspiracy so they can have evidence for the unreliability of social media. And, I guess that itself is a conspiracy theory.

Holy recursion, Batman!

I guess there aare many morals, chief among them to get your news from a source with a trusted editorial process because "the crowd" is hardly up to the task.
