The Military Secret Behind Super Bowl Flyovers

You'll probably see a flyover at the Super Bowl Tomorrow-Here is how they do it

If this is your first time watching the Super Bowl, you might be surprised that US Military aircraft fly over the New Orleans Caesars Superdome.

Is it a waste of taxpayer money? A show of grandstanding?

A lot of planning goes into a military Flyover of an NFL game. The Secretary of the Air Force, the venue and the unit all coordinate to make the day happen. A JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller typically) or a pilot typically sits in the stadium with a radio, informing the pilots of what note of the national anthem the singer is on. This allows the lead pilot to fly overhead on the last note. This action also simulates flying down a "Hot Target Line" for a simulated bomb run.

Special thanks to the 175th Wing of the Maryland Army National Guard and the Baltimore Ravens.

Note that this video was originally aired last year but was recut / edited for the Super Bowl event.
