No, Russia is not flying Confederate flags from the American Civil War.

And technically the "Confederate Flag" isn't the Confederate Flag either.

I originally uploaded this to YouTube, but it got ad restricted. Because… well YouTube I guess. You never know exactly why. This is how you get investigated by congress, YouTube.

I never ask this, but please either share this or join my Substack as a paying member. People need to know what YouTube is doing.

Here’s the story. A viewer sent me this video:

And around the 12:10 mark, you see what looks like a Confederate Flag from the American Civil War.

But if you want to get technical, what we call the “Confederate Flag” isn’t even the real Confederate Flag.

This is the confederate flag, which represented the Secessionist States during the American Civil War.

But is was too similar to the Union flags of the American Civil war to be recognized correctly on the battlefield.

So the Battle flag Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia was transformed into a sort of important national symbol of the south.

Sort of like how the Z symbol that was placed on Russian Tanks as an Identification invasion stripe.

Why is letter Z written on Russian military equipment seen ...

Became a Russian national symbol for support of the war in Ukraine.

Pedestrians cross a street in front of a billboard displaying the symbol 'Z' in the colors of the ribbon of Saint George and a slogan reading: 'We don't give up on our people,' in support of the Russian armed forces, in Saint Petersburg, on March 7, 2022. (AFP)

This flag is really the flag of Novorossiya.

Which is a confederation of the separatist Ukrainian states of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Dark green: Claimed territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics Light green: Extent of Novorossiyan claims

This flag is based on the Russian naval ensign, which can be seen flying on Russian ships.
